pedal assembly SUPER corroded, 'flaking off' in huge grey-white crumbs...repair?

Question

well, visited by buddies backwoods junkyard today and got two old pedal assemblies (for my autostick to stick conversion/71 ghia). problem is, BOTH of my 'new' pedal assemblies "main bodies" (which are made of what?: pot metal? or aluminum?) are SUPER corroded, whitish, and have chunks falling off in huge flakes and greyish-white 'crumbs', even with a dull razor knife. they're so bad they're even perforated through in some spots....the (steel) pedals themselves, though, look pretty healthy, relatively speaking...

so, are the 'main bodies' that the pedals pivot inside of made of pot metal? if they're aluminum, maybe I can sandblast 'em then have em "built back up some" with a wire welder? there's just SO much 'meat' missing from those center castings that they look pretty much unuseable like they are....plus, they're both in 'minor states of seizure' (stuck 1 pedal on 1 and 2 stuck on the other). right now, I got 'em both soaking in a washing soda/battery charger "derustolisis" weird science rig-bath in the garage, to get the rust off (and hopefully UNseize 'em too, IF I 'get lucky'). or, hey, is it possible to buy just the 'center main casting' for the pedal assembly?

New pedal clusters are available, complete, for $80 or so. I think some of the vendors that advertise in VWT & HVWs sell refurbished clusters, can't remember the price.

I think the aluminum/alloy casting is also available on it's own from the Real Source, can't remember the price.

-already got, and use, the stuff...it's fine. by the way, how -your- gland nut? corners rounded off? usea pipe wrench on it ever? or a chisel? I like em "el nice-o" in thecorners. how 'bout a swappable stickshift flywheel, 200mm size, used?could do some cash 'your way' to sweeten the bootie, maybe...by theway, what year's your ol' 4 speed tranny?just today i 'dug out' my ghia to start working on it again...tookabout 4 hours-it was buried under and behind 'other shop rubble' :-/.still gotta pull the pedal assy of IT, maybe IT has a decent centralaluminum core, and also maybe it's the SAME 'central core' the 4 speedpedal assy's use...lot'sa maybe's...or, perhaps ya got a lousy ol' pedal assy to swap? tell ya what: ANYbug type pedal assembly, regardless of overall condition, with anUNcorroded, or 'near uncorroded' center main casting would hold MUCHinterest for me, even if balance of the 'dealie' is stuck, seizedsolid, cosmetically ugly, bent, missing pedal covers, etc....
