'63 Engine Pull Problems

Hello all!

I posted awhile ago asking for help on this very subject but since nothing worked I thought I'd ask one more time and see if anybody can help me. I bought an old '63 beetle that has been sitting out in some guys field for the past 5 years or so that he had converted into a dune buggy. I'm taking apart the entire engine so to clean all the components and replace any that need it...problem is I can't get the engine off the transmission. The car was stuck in gear so I removed the clutch cable so I can disengage the engine from the transmission...problem is that it didn't work. The engine came off for about an inch before stopping fast. I've sprayed lubricant in hopes of freeing it up that way, as well as a good amount of yanking. Before I bring out the sledgehammer I want to see if there is something I'm not doing. Any help would be appreciated!

There is a good chance (given the time out in the field) that the tranny input shaft splines are rusted solid to the clutch disc.

I don't know if applying torque (lots of it) to the crank pulley with the tranny locked up would maybe free it.

Pry the engine out. The '63 tranny has a splined coupling inside which will probably give way. You'd have to take the diff out later to fix that.

Anyone else have a silver bullet for this??

Sounds like the tranny input shaft may have rusted onto the clutch disc.

Dunno what to do to that except keep spraying.

I wonder if there's enough gap for a 13mm open end wrench to undo the pressure plate bolts? One by one, rotating the engine as you go.

well if you are sure that you unbolted everything and all the cables, and you are about to give up....My suggestion is to drop both the engine and tranny together. That way you can really get at the little gap and start prying...

Sounds like you forgot the heater cables on the heater boxs giving the idea that it will only come baack an inch.

I say cut it up, drop it out, attach the tranny to one truck, the engine to another....and drive away

Well, I'll take a look at the heater cables when I go out to take a look at it this afternoon. I've gone over the whole thing a couple times looking for anything that I might have missed...it is hard to inspect under the tranny and engine without a good jack (which I don't have) so it's quite possible I missed something. If everything seems to be detached..then I'm probably just going to tie the frame to something solid, the engine to a truck, and drive away:) I'm going to have to fix lots anyway..whats one more piece:)

I'll let you all know how it works out.
