Depending on the area and severity of the damage you might also be able to pop-rivet in new metal with silicone sealant between the pieces to make it watertight. If you do weld, be cognizant of the fuel line at all times. If you are not an experienced welder do a lot of practice first. When I welded new metal into my pans I had been welding as part of my job for over two years and I still made some stupid mistakes. You may be able to rent welding equipement in your area if you want to do it yourself.

For small stuff though, I think pop-riveting is much more practical (although maybe not as much fun)
