rear transmission mounts

Hi, Can anyone tell me how you can tell if the rear transmission mounts are bad? I keep getting a thumping noise when I go down rough roads. 73 beetle..

does the shift lever move back and forth or otherwise move around related to the engine accelerating or slowing down?
