HMMMM SCREWS???? Maybe some NUTS are holding the engine block/case together. :-) There is usually one 8mm nut that is hidden at the front of the block (front is the flywheel area) near #1 cylinder at bottom. Dig the grease from around that area to check.

Pistons and cylinders should be off! Oil pump has to be completely removed too!

Do you have a good manual? WATCH WHERE YOU PRY THE HALVES APART!! There are tools that fit inside of the oil pump cavity and push the case halves apart. later, dave

Like, why are you doing this anyway?

( Is this a TROLL, or genuine?)

Thats easy ;) Remove the rocker covers (assuming you can do this without the manual) then remove the rocker gear (only a couple of bolts) then you will see the "big" bolts that hold it all together...undo them all, and pull on the heads, and soon you will have a lovely big pile of bits on the floor, inc pushrod tubes etc ( best replace ALL these as well). Then, you may realise, that perhaps it would have been a good idea to buy a book first, as trying to do this via a newsgroup will no doubt prove a longwinded experience, cerainly more longwinded than paying a few quid/bucks for a simple book.... VW engines may be easy, but in the wrong hands, can be a nightmare!!!!

It is impossible to remove all the nuts that hold the case halves together without removing the heads and the cylinders. You must also have the flywheel removed before begining to disassemble the engine. It will be much more difficult later.

You must first study the manual carefully. The Haynes manual is the second best out there (after the Bentley), and it covers the topic of engine rebuilding very well (and in a more straightforward way that the Bentley does). Don't touch the engine unless you have completelly understood the procedure, you might damage it.
