Removing Distributor

For most of you, this is a pretty simple question but since I'm new to VW's and the distributor won't budge at all I thought I would pose this question to the newsgroup. I have a '63 bug, and I've loosened one bolt found underneath the distributor where it enters the engine case and removed a nut that is just an inch away. I would think that now the distributor would slide out or perhaps screw out, but I can't move the distributor at all. Is there something else I'm missing? I've check a few books but they don't help. Any thoughts? I don't want to damage anything by pulling anything I shouldn't. Thanks

Neil

hmm those two things are the ones to loosen. the whole thing should come right out...try turning the engine over by hand ..maybe it will loosen things up. or small taps with a rubber mallet

If you loosen the things you have mentioned, it should be free to come off. Only thing there still holding it should be the distributor o-ring. It is possible that it is stuck in the case. Turn the distributor back = and forth while pulling it up. And beware of your knuckles when it finally decides to come off (how do I know?).

I would not suggest hitting it with anything, if it is possible still to = try something else.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. This engine has been sitting outside for 3 years or so before I got my hands on it so it's quite possible it's rusted in there, but I'll dig up a rubber mallet and have a go at it. It won't turn side to side but I guess I'll just have to 'convince' it to come out:)

Thanks again, Neil

Howdy....

I've got a funky habbit of finding FROZEN engines and trying to see how far open I can get them...

I've found that if you totally remove the right side bolt (when looking at the engine) bolt (near the gen/alt stand)... and open up the dist clamp and knock the dist clamp with a flat head screw driver that the dist will eventually pop up... putting a bigger flat head screw driver between the clamp and case gives you some good pry surface.

you may foul up the clamp, but should save the dist.... $2 vs $50

I had the same problem after I purchased my 62 sedan. The 40hp engine had sat in a garage for a decade or more. That distributor was frozen solid in the case. I removed the cap, points, and vacuum assembly. Then I got a large plumbing wench and slowly, carefully rotated that distributor back and forth while applying penetrating oil. Didn't take long to free up. I rebuilt the distributor and it works great. Use a rag around the distributor to prevent teeth marks from the wench.

It pulls up and out from the body of the engine. NOT round and round!

Then, if you need another distributor look here:

October is distributor month and I have refurbed a raft of them here:
