stock mounting bracket question

assuming(yeah i know) you are refering to your 73 beetle mentioned in another post it is so easy you will love it...LOL...prop open the decklid and take a look at the hinge setup....you will see a metal (usually alluminum or potmetal) spacer that the hinge bolts to and that spacer bolts to the hinge mounts....simply remove that spacer and bolt the decklid hinges directly to the hingespots on the body, as they were from the factory(also using the existing hardware)...you will have to realign and adjust the decklid when you do, but its no big deal... PS. the bolts should have 10mm heads on them...

Watch out for that arse of a spring. Its much stronger than it looks, it flies faster than superman and please try & do above without removing any part of it.

just put one bolt in on one side and rotate the whole decklid into position on the spring. Very easy to work with the spring this way. it is better to have and extra set of hands just for the paint-chip factor on decklid to body. Mark Detro Englewood, FL

A roommate of mine years ago bought an early 60's bug (don't remember the exact year) and he didn't want to do any maintenance on it at all. At the time I was a Chevy guy and it was driving me nuts with the valve noise and the fact that it ran like crap!! I shamed him into doing a tune-up on it after reading his How To Keep a VW Alive Book with my help and tools. I showed him how to set the valves according to the book (my first experience with a VW mind you) and set about timing the motor. He banged his head (which I've done many times since buying my own VW's) on the decklid hard and decided to take it off seeing as we would probably be awhile till we finished. I agreed and after a few shots from a spray can to mark where the hinges went on the lid he happily started wrenching away....... he was happy because, being not mechanically inclined on cars, it was the first thing I thought it was safe he could do. He was wrenching on the last bolt when all of a sudden the spring shot out so fast I didn't even see it and hit him SQUARELY in his package and dropped him like a rock!!!!! I couldn't help but laugh so friggin hard!!! Almost pissed my pants and had tears rolling off my cheeks!!! That's when I caught the bug of VW's..... showing someone how to work on their car and realizing how simple these old VW's were.
