Testing Horn & other related questions

For my 70 KG I have the dual horn setup.


  1. If I put 12 v on the horn, should it 'beep'? Is there a difference bet the + and - side on the horn connections?
  2. Can I test the horn with a multimeter, i.e. resistance, continuity etc.?
  3. What is the purpose of the relay? Isn't it all 12 VDC?
  4. Can I replace them with a single Beetle horn? If so, do I need the relay?

On the Ghia, one side of the horns is grounded (Brw) and the relay supplies +12V to the Blk wire. So, if you put 12V on the Blk wire, they should sound. If they don't, inspect the ground connection. Better yet, run a temporary ground wire to the Brw terminal on the horn.

The relay is there to carry the extra load of 2 horns. I would try to keep it stock.

Heh, heh. It was that horn relay which initially attracted me to the Karmann Ghia! LOL
