Just pulled the tired old 1600 motor apart and found that sometime this past winter, the thermostat failed.
Anyway, I need a fresh one. Does anyone have one they can part with? Cash or trade. This engine normally goes in the winter car, so an FI T-stat would be just fine. I could use a little extra warmth.

You could try a Mexican Thermostat Conversion Kit from cip1.com. I think the thermostat rod is longer so you need to lift the fan shroud and replace it too.
The 'New Style' thermostat from CIP is actually from VW Brazil. It can be fitted using the original connecting rod but you have to use the new type bracket. The 'New Style' connecting rod shown on their website is the same as the regular one except that it does not have the 'kink' at the top. Later Brazilian Type 1 engines used a different cylinder head which had more space in the area where the rod passed through the head, so there was no need for the 'kink'. If you use this rod, without modification (bending) on an engine with regular heads, it will catch on a cooling fin.
I bought the kit from CIP also. I had to use the original rod, the other was useless and was binding. I also couldn't use the bracket they provided. It was mishapen and din't fit correctly. I took the old bracket and cut the top cage off with a sawzall and ground it a tad. It worked beautifully. The entire mechanism works freely and properly. Eric 68 Bug Cabriolet 62 Ghia cab too
If you want to use the new rod, you can. Simply bend the top part in the same way (relative to the bottom bend) and it will work.
