Turn Signal / Marker Light Weirdness -- 73 Std. Bug

I'm in the process of getting all the lights working properly on my 73 standard beetle, and need some advice. When the headlight switch (recently replaced) is in the 1st position, the left front marker light comes on as normal, but the right is off. When I turn the switch to position 2 (lights fully on), the left one goes out, but the right one comes on! Both work when used as emergency flashers and turn signals. The wiring diagram (courtesy thesamba.com) implies that the marker lights are wired together from the switch (and the wires at the switch appear to be in stock configuration), so I'm at a bit of a loss here. Any ideas? Thanks!

The front lights are wired like this:

Gry wire from each side goes to Fuse #1.Check that this is correct. Both fuses #1 and #2 are fed from Term #58 on the Headlight switch, shown in this photo:

If that wiring all looks OK, I would check for a poor earth connection on the right side. Test for it by using a jumper wire from chassis to the lamp socket shell and see if the problem resolves.

Thank you for your responses, Jim(s)! I cleaned up the grounds, replaced the bulbs and double-checked all the wiring, but still no dice. I'm also having rather catastrophic problems getting the tail lights working properly (will have to post about that soon too, if my efforts this weekend fail). I wonder if the problems could be from a common cause? The lights all worked fine on the car when it was a daily driver a couple years ago, so I'm thinking that at least in theory there should only be one or two new problems causing all this mess... Will do some more troubleshooting and update soon. Thanks again,

Clean all fuse terminals and install all new fuses! Check power at fuse panel (in trunk) and follow wires to their components. Somewhere you will find corrosion and it could be inside of the wire!

Taillights have connections (weak link) behind the engine compartment insulation panels.

Sounds like fun! ;-) Good luck!
