Two simple questions

We have a 72 SB with two small issuesaand a fix-up question. First is simple, does anyone know off the top of their head what light bult is the replacement for a rear turn signal? If not, they should know at the parts store tomorrow.

Second one deals with the front seat belts. The metal loop between the seats lost the fastening bolt on one side. Since it is attached from the inside, I found the bolt on the floorboard. But when I tried to reinstall the bolt, using a allen wrench, it would not tighten. Rather, it popped back out. When I compared it to the other fastening bolt, I found the first one was a bad replacement. Anyone know if this bolt is available from the general auto parts stores, or what size bolt it is.

Thirdly, we plan to replace the original seatbelts with a more modern and easy to use type. Is this possible, are there preferred types, and preferred sources. And, are there any pitfalls with changing the seatbelts out?

Thanks for any help.

John

Got the bulb and the bolt issues taken care of. Now, no one has changed out seatbelts or even tried? Thanks, John

Ok ok. Get your seatbelts from one of the VW supply houses. Same with the bolts. Or take your good bolt along with you to a hardware store and match the diameter, threads and length to new bolts.

Get new belts from one of the aircooled vw specific shops or ask your local auto parts store. Do not install used belts from a junk car, they may have stretched in an accident or dryrotted. Once the belts have stretched in an accident, they should not be reused. (They could cause worse injury to the person wearing them, because they don't 'give' at all anymore). Also the stitching may not be safe anymore. It is illegal to reuse belts from junk cars in many places, and the junk yards cut them up. (or they should).

That said, I have successfully adapted belts from other cars (non-accident) before. They all pretty much use the same bolt size too, I've only seen 2 different sizes, close to each other. Grab a good bolt with you so you have something to match to. Reuse as many bolts from your car as possible. bolts going into the center tunnel may have lots of rust in the threads, both in your car and the possible donor. Crack them loose and work them out gradually with some good lubricant, going back and forth.

Don't use bolts longer than what you pulled out from your car/what you need. Especially in the b-pillar...
