Where do these bolts go?

I am slowly getting all the bolts out of my 68 bug to remove the body, most of the nuts have broken off inside the heater channels, but I am going to replace them anyway, so I dont really care. But, where do the 2 bolts at the front bolt in to? The ones underneath, just in front of the floorpan, there are 2 of them quite close to each other on each side, bigger than the ones that hold the body to the edges of the floor. Do they go into the heater channels too, or will I need to fix something else if they break when I try to get them off (soaking in plusgas right now). Hopefully someone will know which ones I mean :)

Oh, and is there any reason to remove the engine? We are replacing the floor pans and the heater channels with the body off.

Those two (four) go into the front bulkhead, "firewall" if the engine was in the front. The horizontal part of it, before it curves up to clear the tunnel.

It is easier to lift the body off of the engine isn't in the way. Remove shifter too. Although the body isn't all that heavy. Especially with the windows removed. Keep the doors attached, and closed or weld a brace or two in the door jamb, connecting the A and B pillars near the bottom. BEFORE removing body.

Adam,

There is a steel plate with 2 tapped holes in the front of each heater channel assembly that those bolts attach to. As a matter of fact. this plate actually moves around within the hc, allowing some 'wiggle room' when bolting body to chassis.

This is the two bolts you are talking about go:

They DO go into the front of the heater channel. they will screech and scream coming out, and most likely the threads will be nonexistant, rendering the bolts almost useless to reuse. Also one other thing. The lower part of the firewall is where the nuts are. mine was rusted away. now getting all that stuf to line up again proved to be a pain. this is how I came up with a solution to that:

but that is the way I did it... correct - not really, but its my car.

the way I replaced a heater channel:

yes i took out the engine... it made it easier to roll the pan out from under the body. which ever way YOU decide to do it.... just be safe about it!
