Wierd tach/condenser issue at coil

Hello,

Today when i was driving on the interstate, I began to notice a miss in the motor every now and then. Nothing major, and i fullyintended to have a look into it when i got home.

Well, I had to make a stop at a store, and when i came out, the motor turned over, but not even a hint of it igniting. So, i look for loose wires...coil, condenser, cracked distributor, you name it. Nothing seemed wrong. I tried again and again. Motor would turn over, I could smell gas (and i verified pressure in the engine bay).

I decided (as a last gasp.....my AA card was already out) to just move the condenser wire to a different prong and leave the tach off. The car then fired right up. But, when I try to put the tach wire BACK onto the negative side of the coil, the motor dies immediately.

This tach has been wired in the same location for at least 5 years. What gives?

It's funny, everything works right up until the moment it doesn't anymore. Wierd, huh? Either a short in the wire to the tach, or the tach's bad.

Sounds like the wire from the tach is grounded somewhere. I'd get a piece of wire and connect it directly (from the back of the tach, outside of the car to the engine compartment) just to make sure. If this works, just replace the wire.

Hope this helps, Karls
