Wire loom

Hmmm... that doesn't sound right at all... the wiring loom should go along next to the roofline in the channel past the interior lamp just above the driver's shoulder and then back into the engine compartment.

There'd be a wire going down to the door lamp switch but not the whole bundle. Start in the engine compartment... note where the main wiring bundle leaves the engine compartment (should be left side upper). From there, it goes to the front of the car with one wire coming off at the interior light. Pull your interior lamp out and you should be able to see the wiring loom going past.

Over on the right side of the engine bay, there's a wire heading off to the battery.

You can see the wiring loom leaving the engine compartment in this image on the left side. Hope that helps.

Ok. So I need to rewire my Bug from one end to the other, too many electrical issue that have me pulling my ponytail out so I decided to just do it right and rewire the whole damn thing. Question: The main loom appears to go into the heater channel in the driver's footwell. Any ideas on the best way to thread the new one through or am I missing something simple?

Thanx. Sneaks '68 Type 1

NOTE: Later cars, like your '68, do run the harness alongside the heater channel (not in the roof).

The harness doesn't actually go *into* the heater channel, but at the front it snakes thru a hole in the sheet metal in order to get to the inside of the fender well and then up thru the bottom of the dash.

Pull a coathanger wire thru and attach the harness to it.

I wouldn't have expected that... what is the advantage? The roofline route seems fairly direct to me in comparison. In the later cars, was there no longer enough room just to the left of the windshield to bring it down through there?

Dunno why. Maybe production floor expediency.

Ummm.. no. Nothing in the roofline goes past the driver's shoulder. Only the interior light wire goes up the A pillar.

All teh rest of the main harness goes down the OUTSIDE of the A pillar, behind the carpet, and then alongside the driver's side heater channel, on the floor, secured in polace with small metal clips. Under the carpet again, out of sight, but not inside the heater channel. It continues there until it gets under the backseat, and from there it enters the "heater channel", only to make a sharp turn upwards... then it climbs up the rear 1/4 panel and runs right along the fender mounting bolt area, and exits from the top left corner of the engine bay. Making it look like it came from above, from the channel in the roof.

I bet it was just easier to lay it down on the floor, and it is easier to replace and service too because of the easy access?

(Forgot to mention that my reply applies to his 68 and later bugs)
