Hello again, Many thanks for all the tips. Jan, you were right about the spark plug wires getting mixed up. I had them on wrong at the distributor cap. I checked the book (Haynes VW 1600 Transporter 1968-1979), Chapter 4, Ignition System, and there is a very clear diagram. So after the rain stopped and everything dried out today, I set that straight. Then I trickle charged my battery for a few hours, and tried to start. Still no go. Great cranking but no firing. I rearmed the auto choke, but still nothing. (I found out the condenser is grounded, so that part is OK). I also regapped the points, and I feel I did pretty good this time. Anyway, tomorrow I'll try some more tests at the coil and spark plugs, and maybe a few other things. This forum is great, and really does offer much valuable info. Thanks again, Susanne
