2000 V40 dealer says non volvo break pads cause break warning light

The red Break warning light comes on at least once or twice a day then goes out after a day or two. My dealer says that it's because there are non volvo rear break pads installed. Sounds like an attempt to avoid warranty service to me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Break fluid is topped up and the pads are only 3 months old.

By itself, that comment is absolute nonsense. Ask the dealer to clarify - wrong parts, poor installation, etc. What did the people who installed the brakes say?

Thank you Steve S for the reply.

They are the correct pads for the V40, just not made and installed by Volvo. They are installed properly and have been working fine for 6 Months. The dealer disconnected the battery, I guess to reset something internal. I could tell because i had to re-enter the security code for the radio and the clock was wrong. He then said that non-Volvo pads would wreck the rotors. Gave me back the car and said that everything checked out OK. The light is now on all the time. I could use some help on how to approach them next time in for this.

Have them replace the reservoir for the master cylinder the brake fluid level sensor is built in & is causing your complaint if your car is under 4 years from the delivery date & the mileage is less then 50,000 miles then this repair should be covered under warranty
