'82 Diesel Timing Belt/Head

Well, the timing belt broke. Took off the valve cover off and, um, the cam was in five pieces. I heard somewhere this substantially reduces power. The head is toast. The cam carriers busted off and there is coolant seeping everywhere. Since this happened just off of idle, I've been told the chances are very good this pistons are okay. Once i figure out where to get that damned socket needed to get the heads off, I might be able to take a peek. So...

I know this model is used to drop in a small block Chev/ Ford. Last I cked, my vegetable oil system isn't compatible with a gasoline engine, so that's out.

Are there heads available for this diesel? Where might i find such a thing?

The engine has 145k. Is this engine worn out even with a new head?

Is there a turbo version of this motor that will drop in? The naturally aspirated engine in it now is not a lot of fun to get up to speed--even before the timing belt went.

Any comments or advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure what engine your car has but my 86 740GLE TurboDiesel has an Audi D24T engine and I've heard some 240's came with this engine also. It has a stock power rate of 97bhp but have heard of people getting up to 125 by just fooling around with timing etc. Google the D24T engine and you'll find a few sites with good info. Keith

That's a great and positive POV when all things are taken into consideration. I'm indifferent when it comes to Volvo/VW Diesel engines. I think you have a very good V-8 conversion platform. I would consider the FORD 260-302 Group in the "flavor" of your choice. There's quite a bit of web info available regarding conversions.
