85 DL Cuts out, sputters, knocks

May 13, 2005 5 Replies

After about 5 minutes of normal driving, the car cuts out and jerks, like the fuel is being pinched. If i shut off the car and wait a minute it will work for another five minutes before starting over again. When I opened the hood i heard it backfiring. Could this all be a timing belt? Any other ideas?

A timing belt failure will not give you five minutes of normal driving. If you haven't changed the fuel filter lately this would be a good time. The symptoms could be something else, but they are also typical for plugged fuel filters.

Fuel filters should be changed regularly at about 70,000 miles.

it just recently was changed...maybe not put in properly?

A plugged exhaust system will give the same symptoms...
