'88 740 bonnet problem

Jan 02, 2007 2 Replies

Well, I've managed to find myself a bargain in the shape of a 1988 740 GL Estate 2ltr. It's got every dealer stamp, invoice, receipt and you-name-it since the day it left the factory. This car has been seriously looked after and I'm very proud to be the third owner of her. Suffice to say I'm going to be looking after this baby.

There is just one problem (at the moment) with her. It's a two man job to open the bonnet. One person has to push down just above the near side headlamp in order for the bonnet release to work.

I've cleaned and lubed the mechanism and catch on the near side (the off-side is covered in crud but releases with no problem) with no success.

Can anyone suggest a solution to this? Photos can be supplied on request.

Welcome to 2007 BTW. Hope it's a good year for us all.

Richard

If you have checked and lubed the sliding catch, perhaps the angle of the hood catch needs to be tweaked? Or maybe the cable needs to be taken-up a bit?

Thanks for that.

I have lubed up the slider. Next job is the cable.

Can the hood catches be 'tweaked'? If so, how?
