I have a '93 940 in which all the lights on the back of the car function until you press the brake pedal. Once you do that, the lights all go out and do not come back on until you wiggle the driver side tail light connection a bit and then they all come back on... until you press the brakes again. Anyone have any ideas?

+1 on the bad ground. IIRC the volvo uses a common ground wire for all the rear lights. Tap into it and ground to the body.
Is does indeed sound like an earthing fault - except that I would expect a number of lamps to come on dimly rather than nothing at all - as it finds an earth route through several filaments in series. Are you sure that this is not happening? [Best to test in the dark, when it's easier to see very dim lights].
