Since the 960 radio powers the R & L dash spkrs., and the power amp (in the vicinity of the steering column) fed by the radio powers R & L door speakers, it must be the radio unit itself if both your L dash and L door spkrs are dead.

Tail rattle can be almost anything from exhaust hitting to bad rear susp. bushings - have your mechanic put it on a lift.

Tail rattle is most likely the tailgate panel (inner plastic panel). People remove them by puling them off and break the upper mounts where the clips go. I haven't fixed mine yet. Also, look in the spare tire well to make sure the jack or its handle isn't loose in there (there's a strap that secures it to its plastic mount). There is also a cable behind the right side inner carpeted panel that can come loose and rattle in there. Be sure that the timing belt is changed at least every 20,000 miles (I do mine at 18,000). Check the front end bushings, particularly the cone bushings where the rear arm connects to the front arm, and the anti-sway bar links. I got a replacement radio on E-Bay (stock casette player) for about $35 or so. A lot of folks replace them with teh CD player so thay are available. WOrth it just to have a spare casette drive. Try switchng the speakers L to R to see if that helps- the grills slide off- forward I believe.. DO not just pulll them off as it breaks off the mounting tabs. They can be fixed with Devcon super glue and old 3.5" floppy disks torn apart for the outer shells. Cut with scissors and a Dremel tool the plastic repair works great.... Should I go on...?

Easy diagnosis is to pop the grills off the speakers, push them toward the front of the door and swap left for right. If you get no change, it is the amp or the radio.

Had the same thing with the tail rattle. Some of the clips used to attach the liner to the door were broken. Went to the local Volvo dealer, who carried a small repair kit - this is obviously quite a common problem. Installation required removal of the liner panel, but it's not difficult and the dealer will no doubt fill you in on the details.

I have seen pics of the kit- could you describe it and how it is installed and how it works? I was going to fabricate my own "system" but if the kit works I just might go that way. I am particularly concerned about making any mods to the door itself- don't care what I have to do to the panel as long as it doesn't show after installation. __ __ Randy & \ \/ /alerie's \__/olvo '93 960 Estate

hey "960 guys"...is it true the 1993 940 & 960 are the exact same size on doors, chassis, interior, etc...just a different engine, up graded interior, and of course, a bit nicer all around..??

thanx...

You could probably fabricate your own. I don't recall exactly how many pieces, or if any of them were in any way special, but I do recall it being a set of small metal plates maybe 2 or 3 cm long. They simply screwed (plugged?) on where the broken off (plastic?) bits had been, using the same screw/plug holes. Cost was maybe $10, which was preferable to spending the time on a home-grown solution. Take out the panel and you'll probably be able to see what needs doing. Don't recall the exact procedure, but it starts at the interior door latch.

All 940's, 960's and S/V90s are the same dimensions as the 760/740s. The 960, S/V90s, are available with (in UK/Europe) both 2.5 Litre and 3 Litre straight six engines, although the first year saw a Turbo 4 (2.3 Litres) in UK/Europe and a PRV V6 (Australian market). These cars were in production from 1991 till 1998 (UK/Europe) although only 1996 USA/Canada.

I have had the panel off a couple of times. I just didn't want to have to do any mods to the door itself. modifying the inner panel is not a problem.

I think I'll order it woith my next order and give it a shot. __ __ Randy & \ \/ /alerie's \__/olvo '93 960 Estate
