B5252S DOHC / catalytic converter puzzle

Mar 21, 2007 2 Replies

Hi folks, I'm trying to determine the engine type I have. I was told I need a new catalytic converter, and can't afford to pay my shop 1200,00 canadian dollars. So I looked around and found some for way less. But, it seems I need to know the engine type I have before making the purchase. My car: 1996 850 GLE, Engine B5252S DOHC. Apparently, to buy just the right replacement I need to know whether my engine is 20 or 10 valve? Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

In case you 2 are looking for cats, here are some that I am considering: for 20 valve

That engine code is for a 10valve engine.

Unfortunately, the 2.5 10v uses a bespoke manifold / cat arrangment, specific to only this engine. The 20v versions dont fit.

B5252 means:

1st digit B - Bensin (swedish for gasolin) 2nd digit 5 - 5 cylinders 3-4 digits 25 - 2,5 liter 5th digit 2 - 2 valves per cylinder
