Conversion of Dana 30 to positraction.

Has anyone done a rear axle conversion on the plain Jane Dana 30 to positraction. I'm thinking of doing it on my '89 740 trubo 5 speed with ABS.

Pull the wheels and axles. Pop the diff cover and drain the oil. Mark the end bearing caps for orientation and position. Pry/pop out the ring gear assembly. Transfer the ring gear to the new carrier. Use new bolts. There is a bolt retainer/oil slinger plate over the bolt heads held in place by the side bearing. Measure the thickness from the outer bearing edge to the splash plate. Measure the thickness of the splash plate. Add them together. Transfer the side bearings and shims one at a time keeping everything in order (Pull and press. If you can beg borrow or steal the Volvo special tools it will be easier). Measure the distances on the left side bearing as before. If the dimension is larger than before by the thickness of the splash plate then you'll have to remove it. Some assemblies were built for quick ring and pinion exchanges. If the plate isn't there you can prebuild various ring and pinion setups to change gear ratios in an hour or so.

Install the carrier back into the housing. Reinstall the bearing caps and torque to spec. Hold the drive shaft with one hand and the ring gear with the other. Check: that the pinion turns easily, that there is SOME free play (gear face to gear face in the ring gear). Ring gear free play compensates for component growth as the assembly heats up under load.

Refill with whatever synthetic gear oil meets the spec of the manufacturer.

Be sure the carrier in the kit you buy has the sensor wheel/blocks fabricated in the carrier or you speedo and ABS won't work.
