Coolant Question

I have a question about "Volvo" coolant. My '95 940t recommends topping off with it and water 50/50. Is there a commonly available substitute? The auto parts stores say the stuff they sell works just as good. Is there anything special about Volvo coolant? Same thing with our old VW Jetta, and our MB too. Are they all in the coolant business?

I've wondered the same thing...but from what I read here and what the dealer specified, volvo coolant is "phosphate free" (to not harm aluminum)

I've parked my car either until I find it cheaper than $17 a liter from the dealer. I didnt confirm with the volvo sites I've seen mentioned here, what the going price from them is....Dont know about a MB & Jetta but I imagine similar needs.

Yes, right. But don't *most* radiators now days have aluminum cores? So shouldn't they *all* require a phosphate free version of coolant only available from the manufacturer (apparently). The regular stuff, like Prestone, Xerex, etc. must be damaging a lot of cars then? I have to check the specs on my BMW. I wouldn't be surprised if the story wasn't the same with them.

Oops, I should say "aluminum heads". not radiator.

Hi Aleric,

The Prestone I use is"Advanced Formula". Among the "seven metals it is compatible with" is Aluminum.
