I have a 1999 S 40 2.0 T SE Very good and have it serviced by Volvo from new. Its due a 70K service and just wondering if its worth £200+ for what seems to be a very basic service. The next 'big' service is 80K (cam belt etc)(£450 for that one!)
People what should I do? Pay it or go elsewhere?

If you can find another mechanic who knows Volvos and charges less, go for it.
My late uncle, here in the States, once owned a British-made Humber. He often complained about paying mechanics to learn how to fix that car. I learned from the Peugot I once had. The guys in the quick lube places and local service stations couldn't even change the oil properly.
My advice is go elsewhere. I had the 70k service done for my S40 T4 1998, at a non-volvo vat-registered garage for £120, and i got a quote from them at the same time for the 80k (cambelt incl) service, which they quoted at £250 max; quite a saving on the Volvo dealer quote! The only down-side was that the mechanic could not reset the service light as my specific model requires the service light reset tool. However I dont mind having the service reset light on, and as long as I have the service carried out by a vat-registered garage at the specified intervals, this fulfills car warranty validity requirements.
Go on save some money, dont go to Volvo!!!!!
