Turbo Intake Pipe - What goes on this fitting?

More on my 97 850 T5 with 200K, turbo coughing during hard accel.

On further examination found that the item (PCV valve?? Or?) that should be fitted in the intake tube (going from Air Filter/MAF to the turbo) was flopping there, not secured in its hole in the tube at all. This I have fixed...it sits snugly in there. This would have allowed much unmetered, dirty air to enter the turbo directly.

More importantly, I notice a fitting right next to it that had no hose going to it....also appearing to allow unmetered, dirty air to also go direct to the turbo.

What should go on this fitting?

You may notice that I broke the plastic pipes that lead to the valve...I had no idea they were hard plastic, so they snapped when I tried to move the valve out of the way. As these continue on around and under the intake manifold, I intend to find appropriate size rubber tubing to fit around each and connect them back where they belong....I would not expect any difficulty from this solution.

PCV valve...haha...meant to write PVC valve, but it's more like the turbo control valve?

And...so long as you're looking, what exactly does the valve do and what are the functions of the 2 plastic pipes I broke? I put everything back together, trying to men the pipes with rubber "sleeves", but it's not working yet.

I'm going to try to find an independent guy, since the dealer has shown to be completely incompetent for the job.

On an 850, a cap to plug it. Apparently, on other models (e.g. V70) it may be a hose leading to evap tank.

Well, this was an issue of FUEL PRESSURE. The pump hose had slipped off the delivery fitting and was delivering a partial load.

When I had taken the dealer's foreman/master mechanic for a ride, I told him it sounded like it was starved for fuel and asked him to check the pressure. They reported it was fine. Well, that was actually KEY for me...they hadn't gotten a SINGLE thing right so far, so if they said something was one way, you could bet it was the other.

I hooked up a tire gauge to the schraeder valve and it showed 20 PSI. I extracted the fuel pump and found the hose partially off...it's a wonder it was even delivering 20 psi, really. Got a longer piece of fuel hose and did it up and it now drives like a bat out of hell....I think much better than it ever did before as a result of seating the PCV part into the turbo intake pipe.

So, I get to meet with the service manager on Thursday and tell him how a fuel pressure issue was diagnosed as turbo replacement AND the timing belt being WAY off. I hope he used to be a mechanic so he can understand the magnitude of this. Volvo will also hear about this in glorious color.

Thanks for listening, and remember:

Rev-up sputter combined with computer under-reporting MPG means FUEL PUMP issues.
