I've had a 2000 V40 for about 3 weeks. I'm satisfied so far, except that I'm kind of bummed about only getting one key with it and having to pay a king's ransom to get another one from the local Volvo dealer. I spoke to the previous owner and he said he never had any problems in the 50k miles he put on it. The tailgate latch wasn't working right when I got the car, the remote wouldn't unlock it at all and the key was dodgy, but a minor adjustment fixed that. (I took a photo of the offending part, in case anyone else is having the same problem and wants to see how to fix it.)

The V40 appears to be somewhat rare where I live. (West Virginia) Usually when I get a new car I start noticing all the others like it, but I've yet to see another V40. I've only seen one S40.

Have a V40 1.9 TD with 300.000 Km's on ut. Still rund fine. One great tip!! If you need spare ENGINE parts, try go to the Renault garage first. This saved me 50% on the fanbelt tension arm. The aftermarket sidemarkers and headlight also save you a lot.

Furthermore, it's not a big car and the suspension sucks. Shifting gears is somewhat strange. It got a lot better when I replaced sone diskspacers underneath the car.

Under the hood many things can be making "strange noises". The oil plug leaks oil quite often.

I like my 81' 240 better but it expensine in the gasoline.

Replace the timing belt allway's earlier than is stated in the manual! They seem to snap often.

Seats are comfy, climate control is great. It won't rust (zinked).

All the best,

Martijn (The Netherlands)

Are you speaking specifically of the V40 or is that general advice? Is the

1.9 an interference type engine, that is to say, do the pistons collide with the valves if the timing belt breaks?

Martijn - only the diesel engines have something in common with renault - the turbo gas engines are Volvo`s own and you wont find any parts for them at a renault garage - timing belts do not break premature on those engines

The deisel versions where newer sold in the US
