Volvo 960 2.5/1996 Increasing power

Hello,

is it possible to increase the power of this engine by changing chip or else? The engine has 125 Kw / 170 Hp and I used to drive a 960 2.9 / 204 Hp. This engine was much more comfortable then my new car There were some formal postings where I could read that it's possible to increase power by changing chip in the computer? Is it possible for this engine as well or not?

thanks

As far as I know the difference was the camshaft, though there's other options to get more power, there's really nothing you can do without cracking open the engine and changing parts. You could turbocharge it if you want a LOT more power, but that's quite an involved project and will take some research and $, but it's been done.

the 960 is a nice platform (from what i have gathered) to biuld on...i would mod the folowing:

- exhaust system

- mod chip

- cold air intake

- perf cam

- maybe injectors

- the usual suspension and brake work..

what have you done so far? what is the

0 - 60mph time?

I didn't do anything until now. I just drive the car for 1 month, and I drove the other 960 (2.9) for 6 years. The difference is too much. This car is much more comfortable concerning the suspension and noise. But the engine is too slow. It's a pity. I was just wondering if it was possible to increase the power, with a minimum on costs, like changing the computerchip. I don't want to change camshaft or built in a turbo, I don't think it's that important, it's just a matter of comfort and safety! What if I only change the computerchip? Would I notice the difference?

Power needs money and fuel. Give it up if you don't want to spend much. I always tell the youger people not to drive fast but accelerate gently is the golden rule of saftey and comfort.

you are right. I am a very smooth driver though. That's why I bought a 2.5 in stead of a 2.9 which one I had before. I never thought this would be this much difference. I won't spend much money offcourse. I only thought if it was possible to increase the power by changing the chip, this could be nice. I don't want to spend much work or money on it. No way! thanks for your answer

The difference was that he lost nearly half a liter of displacement with the smaller engine (that was, incidentally, not available in the US).

I think the best option would be to look for a newer-style 960/90 with the bigger engine.
