02 Passat headlight.

After 22K miles one of the headlights on our 02 Passat went bad. Are they covered under warranty ? How about ease of replacement, could a somewhat mechanically inclined person repace the bulb ?

The bulbs are covered under warranty.

Took me less than 15 minutes at a very leisurely speed on my 2000 Passat. This includes about 10 minutes for driving to Kragen's (local parts store) and buying the $7 or so bulb.

That is about as complicated a thing I do on cars theses days, so I am not a mechanic. It helps to have thin fingers. If you can change a light bulb in a flashlight, you should be able to do this.

I laugh when I read statements that people would never buy a VW because their bulbs burn out frequently (somewhat true), requiring a large expense (not true) and a day-long visit to the service place (not true)...

Are they also included on the certified second hand warranty? I'm using so many bulbs that I started my own supply line from Europe.

I just lost a headlamp bulb on my '02 Passat this morning too; must be the season for it.

I was annoyed to find that there are NO instructions for replacing the bulbs in the owner's manual, just a bunch of warnings and a suggestion to have it done by the dealer.

The fact that the bulbs are covered by the warrany almost makes that a reasonable thing to do, if I had the afternoon free to wait for them to do it.

Passat's and A4's both use a lot of bulbs. The season in year round.

I had some decent instructions in my '99 manual, but I guess that all works different because I have the older lights (that really don't require instructions).
