I share your confusion regarding the apparent need for neck snapping acceleration in a family car. I have been commuting since the late 70's in various VW diesels, the most powerful one having a whopping 52 horsepower. These cars have proved more than up to the tasks that comprise 90% of average driving. I have not won many drag races, but then again, I never felt tempted to enter. Maybe that is a good thing.
The whole Eurovan thing is another mystery. Reviews hated it because it was slow, yet no slower than other vehicles in its class. It was also too boxy, yet the magazines love some of the new boxy little Japanese cars on the market...it was also branded too heavy, yet the media darling Honda odyssey weighs about the same. I am not saying it should have been the years best car, but at least be honest in the critique.
Sorry for straying off topic.
