1.8t hp boost for 02?

Jan 08, 2005 3 Replies

Hello, I see claims that the 02 1.8t has 30 more hp than the 01 version. I would be interested to know how exactly they accomplished this, and how it might be possible to upgrade an 01 to the new specs? also any comments on the actual difference in perfomance between the two would be appreciated. thanks greg

It's black magic! For starters boost pressure is higher, above that I'm not sure. Check over at vwvorte.com and there should be more info there.

I think Woodchuck meant vwvortex.com. In a nutshell, there's a different turbo on the 2002 models.

I believe that the turbo is the same, but the boost pressure is higher (0.8 bar for 2002, 0.6 bar for 2001).

Other differences between AWW (2001 motor) and AWP (2002+ motor) are a mildly higher compression for ratio AWP and a larger downpipe (actually identical to the older 150 hp AWP).

The easiest way to make horsepower gains is to slap in an ECU upgrade from APR, Revo, Neuspeed, etc. For 500 bucks or so you can take your 150 bhp AWW motor to 200 bhp, no sweat.
