I'm currently wearing my flame-retardant underwear in the event you folks consider this question off-topic, but what the heck. I've been reading and contributing to this group for a decade or more, and I've come to respect the opinions of many regular posters for their automotive knowledge and experience. My 1987 GTI is still running strong in large measure due to the advice I've received from this group. I've posted to the Audi group, and the input I've received hasn't been particularly useful. And Audi and VW are corporate siblings right?
Anyway, I have the opportunity to purchase a 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro 20V with 200,000 miles. It is a private party seller, and he is asking $5000. Reference to Kelley Blue Book suggests that this asking price is a bit optimistic, but I understand that this particular model is relatively rare as only about 1700 ever came to the states. The car is in fair to good condition and has most of the original bits and pieces. I'm going to have the car checked out by an Audi specialist and assuming the compression is acceptable and there are no major problems uncovered, I'm considering offering $4000.
So what do you folks think? Am I getting myself into a maintenance nightmare here with a high-mileage, low-volume car where parts might be expensive and hard to find? Or do these cars share enough commonality with other Audi models that parts are relatively plentiful? How 'bout the rarity? Do this make the car more desirable as a future collectible?
I'm located in the Pacific Northwest, so if anyone can recommend an excellent Audi shop between Portland and Seattle it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Kent
