2000 Jetta GLS VR6 Backfiring?

Question

Hi, I have a terrible problem with my Jetta. For a couple of weeks, it has been hesitating slightly when I shift gears up to about 3000 rpm. Once I pass 3000 rpm the car runs fine. The last couple of days, it has been not only hesitating but also backfiring. I immediately brought it to my local mechanic who replaced all the filters and spark plugs. Unfortunately, this did not cure the problem. Tomorrow, I am bringing it to the VW dealer but I am curious as to what to expect going in. How serious do you think this problem is?

Furthermore, my car is out of warranty and I am looking for a mechanic who specializes in VW/Audi in the Montreal area. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Backfiring is usually caused by a lean mixture, probably a fuel problem.

It could be the O2 sensor.  Have you had yours replaced since you boughtthe car ?  There was a recall for them. dv

O2 sensors will set the MIL if it's faulty.

Last winter my MIL would go on intermittently and the dealer said it was the O2 sensor. He said he didn't replace it because it was still mostly OK and I wouldn't have to spend $500. But now you say it was a recall? So it would have been free?

Is there any place on the net to go to know what other recalls there are on 2001 Jettas?

VW will send you a notice or just call the VW dealer and give them the VIN!

What did u find out from the dealer? i am wondering if i need to get my 02sensor replaced on my 2000 or if they did it when the car was traded in(bought in 2002). Is this something a dealer would do if the car was tradedin and the person had not gotten the work done while they owned the car?Thankskd
