90 Golf Secondary fuel pump R&R ?

I have a cracked fuel pump housing on my 90 Golf.

This is the secondary pump which has the fuel filter attached to it.

I finally got around to removing the housing. It has like 5 lines on it.

The 4 rubber mounts and the attaching bolts were rusted and they all broke but I was able to order some. Not bad only about $2 each.

Any ways here is the problem. On the main line going to the tank is a little spring and a check valve or anti flow valve. It fell out when I was taking off the line.

I have no idea which way it goes as I was not expecting anything to be in the line.

Does the spring go towards the tank with the valve towards the housing or vice versa?

Anyone know or can lead me in the right direction.

Maybe someone can check their Bentleys and see if it shows a pic
