92 Jetta Turbo Jetta Hop-up

Is it a EchoDiesel? If so it's got a small turbo strapped to a close ratio gear box.You could find a older transmission with different gear ratios. I owned 6 or so 85-91 jetta diesels and the 85-86 models had a better grear ratio then the 91 Echo I had. But you can't beat my 99.5 jetta tdi except maybe with a 2004 100 hp tdi. If you just want highway speeds you can change just 5th gear I believe without dropping the tranny. The person I sold my 91 echo to sold it at 317k miles when he got a 2003 jetta tdi. The cylinder head was never off this car!

First thing is to put 2 1/2 inch exhaust on it. After that you can increase the fueling a bit but I REALLY stress getting a pyrometer before starting any of that. Run too hot and you risk hole-ing a piston, especially if any of the injectors shoot a bad pattern! Increasing the boost doesn't do much until you likewise increase the fuel to match the increase in air. An intercooler will do wonders, more than a couple more psi, but you need more fuel after it's installed, to take full advantage. Some quick adjustments to the pump can often add a lot of driveability but like I said I stress adding a pyrometer so you don't hurt anything. Loren
