94 Golf Diesel Over Heating???

I'm wondering if anyone can help me here. Are my assumptions correct?

I have a 94' VW Golf Diesel

Last night I noticed it dripping coolant and popped the hood to find out the RAD fans were not even running, the temp gauge inside was showing around 70.

1) I think an earlier over heat killed the temp. sending unit? Where do I find it on the engine and is it possible to "cook" it?

2) I tested the Temp "sender" that screws into the RAD and it also appears to be "cooked" I hot wired the wires coming from it to the Fans and the fans kicked right in, I was able to run it on both high and low.

Any ideas what else to look for before I start ordering these two new parts? Anyone have part numbers or official names?

do you have one of those nasty plastic water pump impellers?

all the emphasis nowadays is on using 100% recycled materials

your water pump might be made of recycled East German Trabant windshield washer resevoir tank plastic

That's a new one, I'll have to check it. Since the RAD was getting hot I assume that the water from the engine was flowing through the RAD

Finally got the temp down by installing a thermostat that opens at 160 instead of the regular 190. Now the car runs around 100 even.

I think the 160 and 190 are F and the 100 is C.
