95 Jetta GL trunk won't open.

My trunk lid was rattling when I drove on bumpy roads so I tightened it up by moving the bar that the latch grabs onto down just a bit. 99% of the time I open the trunk by using the remote release in the car.

Everything was fine for about a month after adjusting the latch then one day I hit the remote release button and I could hear it actuate but when I went back to the trunk it was still locked. I put the key in the lock and depressed it and turned it but it stuck in the depressed position and now it won't open.

The latch is partly exposed inside the trunk with a hole in the latch. Is this hole there to release the lock with a narrow punch or nail? Any ideas how to open the trunk so I can fix whatever is broken?
