Trunk lid that just won't open!!!

89 Jetta was the donor for my taillights today until I went to open the trunk lid on the donor car. It appears the the rod from the latch assembly has come off. Anyone know of a trick to get these things open without a whole lot of "f**king around"?

It wasn't Ben's car was it?

Well a relatively small person can fit through that hole but also can get slightly stuck. Don't ask me how I know, and I don't consider myself small at all. lol Hire a child to go through the hole and talk them through unlocking it.

Or maybe some very long tools, like a 5 foot long screwdriver to hopefully pull that rod upwards, removing the trim and lock itself, or ???

I;ve got a 3 foot phillips im going to try, no dice on the rod, that is the problem, it's not on the latch.

No little kids you could get to go in there? And I assume that access/ski hole is too small for you to get inside. I hope you are not claustrophobic! If so take a phone and flashlight in there with you. :-)

I tried to climb through but my right shoulder won't make it through.

The jaws of life perhaps. Or, in the past, I've removed the trunk trim and gotten in that way. Wasn't easy and I can't walk you through it by thinking about it but it did get done (and nothing was broken in the meantime). Otherwise, you've got the back seat armrest/ski bag thingy to work with.

Good luck.
