Backup Lights 96 Passat GLX

The backup lights are not working on my 96 Passat GLX. All other lights on the car seem to work fine. I replaced the bulbs, checked the fuses. I had my wife get in and put the car in revese with headlights turned on / off, brakes on / off - nothing ... Any ideas, I don't know where to start.

If you checked the fuses, and the bulbs then go the next step further - check the contacts for the bulb and the reverse switch (no idea where this would be... somewhere in or on the transmission maybe).

Stick or Automatic? If a stick, it might be the reverse light switch possibly located on the transmission. If an automatic, there might be a starter interlock relay that controls the backup lights.

I forgot, but are the backup lights in the trunk lid on yours? If so I would suspect wiring issues in the harness near the hinges.
