Cabriolet Convertible trunk lid strut

The old strut on this trunk lid door was no longer holding the door up far enough, so I purchased a new strut. I haven't had a chance to install it yet, but I did try to manually compress it. Even with all of my strength I could not make it budge at all. Am I doing something wrong, or does that little trunk lid door have all of that leverage? Heck, the door couldn't weigh more than 5 pounds!

By the way, the new strut looks exactly the same as the old one in all dimensions.

The door almost certainly weighs more than 5lbs, and think of the mechanical advantage it has. Remove the old strut and try opening the door by pushing on the point which it was attached.

You were absolutely correct, Johann. Today I installed the new strut, and it works beautifully - even though with all of my strength I was unable to compress it manually - and yes, the trunk lid does weigh more than 5 pounds. As the old saying goes, "live and learn". ;>)
