No, the intake is not removed for doing spark plugs. This is an easy job to do, you just have to have the correct tools.

There is a special tool to pull the plug wires out without doing damage. Hazet tools makes one, I use one made by

And of course, a spark plug socket, nothing really fancy, just a rubber bushing inside to keep the plug in place while you lower towards the cyclinder head.

FYI, don't use Bosch Platinum spark plugs.... let your friend make that mistake in his own car. :)

I've seen this a several times, engine running rough, has Platinum plugs in it, trash those plugs and put in the good 'ol OE plugs, problem solved.

The problem is, if anything else is wrong causing platinum plugs to foul, they won't unfoul when the problem is corrected. Bosch marketing says they are less likely to foul, but in my experience that doesn't seem to be the case.

The little bitty needle sized electrode just doesn't have much surface area and so fouls rather quickly, I guess.
