DRL Issue

I just swapped in some new low beams (superwhite 5000k.) Now, my '01 GTI VR6 seems to have forgotten it has DRL. Not that it's a big deal or anything, but i was just wondering if my suspicion is correct. I'm thinking it's just that my bulbs (cheap: $5 each) are simply not capable of producing visible light at the low voltage that the DRL runs on. I haven't had a chance to stick my voltmeter on there, but i just wanted to get an outside opinion on it, as this is my first time replacing bulbs on a DRL vehicle, as well as my first time using 5000k.

Sound reasonable ?

What is the wattage of the new bulbs? I have seen some bulbs "melt" the DRL wiring resistance circuit in the system.

VW's low-beam DRLs operate at nearly the same voltage as regular low beams. Even with crappy bulbs you should see something visible.

If not (and if the DRLs are still working) and you still can't see anything really, I wouldn't dare drive at night with what appears to be 5000K candles. :)
