Electrical issues - wet relays for wipers

Hello all

The 91 Golf has re-developed a problem I thought I nailed over a month ago. The electrical box got drenched from a leak around the windsheild, making the wipers have minds of their own. I dried the electrics, opened the relay cases and dried them out... Problem solved.

Yesterday my brother comes home and tells me that the car made an ass of him driving home, the wipers kept running.... Great.

Open up the rear wiper relay, there is 1 cm on water in the black cap... The other relay is good. I dried the relay, and sealed it with glue and electrical tape for now... working great. There was a slight wet spot on the foam under the electrics, but the soundproofing insulation above it was dry. I have the windsheild completely sealed, where should I look now?

Is there a drain hose running thru the compartment? Should I look around the wiper armature holes, could it be leaking around my antenna connection, could it be coming in from where the onbaord computer is???

This car has left me distraught, I have it mechanically running so nicely, I really want my dad to be able to use it for another year or more.... He doesn't need the $20000 expense of a new Golf right now... better things to spend money on, education for us kids and such ;-).

......... That and I want my 99 TDI back, I have to "stress test" the old Dub (not that I mind, just that my car is more cushy and refined)

On the old A1s I would recommend a plastic shopping bag over the fuse box until the water leaks were fixed. That cheap trick seemed to work. Could be windshield or rusty perforated body by the windshield. How do you know you stopped the leak(s)? Is there a sunroof? Wiring grommets going into the body OK? Even the Speedo cable, hood release cable and radio antenna?

Just thinking out loud! ;-) later, dave Reminder........ Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them, and you have their shoes. Frieda Norris

There is rust around the winsheild... a little. We got out the black silicon caulking, pulled back the rubber seal, and loaded in the caulking all around the perimiter of the windsheild, on the metal side, not the glass side tho, I don't think this should be the problem.
