Eurovan... Did something fall off??

Question

Hi everyone,I just bought a '99 Eurovan. It's great, but there's a coolant leak! Ibriefly examined the cause, and I'm wondering if this might be it: Is there supposed to be a plug of some kind there? Coolant isdefinately coming out.Here's a picture of it and the whole engine. I'm pointing to  this be a simple answer to the problem??Many thanks. Other than this, this van is awesome. Yes the little plastic plug broke off. Check your dealer for  the plug andmaybe the seal under the plug if needed. The seal might be part of the plug.

What's the thing for anyway? Mine has the plug although I've noticed some "coolant crust" around it. What's that plug for? (well duh I know that it's supposed to plug a hole, but what's the hole for?)

(Hmmm...that's looking messy...I probably should take it into the dealer and get it fixed before it goes missing like yours...)

Hey thanks for all the input everyone! I went by the VW dealer today, but there is some uncertainty over which part is the right one. The best guess is that it is P/N 7D0-121-156-J which is water hose J. Unfortunately, they guess you can't just buy the plug, you have to buy the whole hose :( Even worse, the cost for the hose is $147. Here's a webpage with that part. It's #21:

what about 19, 28, 42?looks like the sender and o-ring with clip go into the hole.

But the sender is electronic, isn't it?I printed out the diagram, and compared it to my van. It actuallylooks like a part on there with no part number!Here's the diagram again: at where the sender is listed again towards the center of thediagram. It lists 19, 28, and 42 in decending order, and then there'san elbow shaped hose with a circle on the corner of it. I thinksthat's the one. It looks like an arm with an elbow pad. I think theelbow pad is where the cap should be. Atleast I'm 99% sure. I thinkit's there again on the left side of the diagram to the right of 28,19, and 42. But again no part number.Could I just wrap the hose up in duct tape and be done with it?? Ordoes it have to breath? Would that cap be there to manually let theair escape before dismantling?-Mike Walters

Doesn't look like it...it's not a sensor (no wires).

The sensor you're talking about (I think) is at the lower part of the hose and the missing cap (a little leaky in my case) is near the top (no wiring or anything).

#20 should be the hose assembly you are speaking about.the sender doesn't hafta be hooked up, can just use it as a plug.i wouldnt use tape or anything like that, since the cooling systemis under pressure....news:...
