The manual for my 92 diesel jetta says the tank has a 1.7 gal "reserve" - but there does not seem to be a warning light.
Have I just not got the tank level down far enough?
Or is the "reserve" indicated by the red area on the guage?

Yes, it is indicated by the red area.

It's the red zone and there is no warning... And if the gauge is like the one in my old 1991 Golf it should read like this: More then full = FULL, Full = 3/4, 3/4 = 1/2, 1/2 = 1/3 1/4 = 1/6 or so, Red = The bitter end.
