Golf 3 Suspension and Steering

I have a 1993 Golf 3 1.8 (engine ABS). Its a great car but over the past few months the whole suspension, steering and handling seems to have deteriorated. I experience the follwing;

*Steering wheel sway at low speeds changing to heavy vibration at 60 *Steering wheel seems to be sightly pointing right to get it to go in a straight line (i.e. if you put the wheel straight, the car goes left) *Somethign 'clunks' when I make a left turn *lots of rockin' and rollin' on bumpy roads

I had 4 new tyres, plus balance and tracking recently hoping it would correct most of the issues, but it has not.

I get the impression that the front end needs an overhaul, maybe new ball joints new shocks etc as its all still the original items, but I am not really sure where to start and how to diagnose which components need replacing e.g. driveshaft CV joints - how can I tell if these need replacing.

Also I have a haynes manual but to be frank the diagrams are few and not that helpful. Is there a good source of images anyone can point me to?

TIA

I think golf's going left is normal mine does it although i don't get any of the other symptoms, although i do want to replace the shocks also as feels like car is on stilts over bumps.

My experience with Haynes is they tend to have a few generic diagrams that aren't always very helpful. Maybe you should look into getting a Chilton's manual. The one for my Jetta is on order so I don't know how well they do VW... but my '86 Nissan p/u is covered in great detail. They even have different diagrams for each of the engine and drivetrain options.
