Golf TDI 2002, Intermittent sags and surges in power

Sep 07, 2004 9 Replies

My TDI runs great and has over 185,000 km on the clock, but it does accelerate oddly at times. There's no discernable pattern to the behaviour. Sometimes in smokes under full acceleration and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the acceleration rate sags and then recovers (O2 sensor perhaps), but at other times, it's like the waste gate has slammed shut and it takes off like a scalded cat. Most recently, I was accelerating up an on ramp in third gear, I punched it, and it took off like it was doing a GTi impersonation. On the next on ramp I used, it was back to normal.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a sticky wastegate.

Thanks, I'll talk to the dealer about it. I didn't want to go in there without some idea as to where to start.

A TDI with an O2 Sensor? I've never seen THAT one!! :)

The 02 TDI turbo also does not have a wastegate. :-)

You ARE correct! The variable vanes take the place of the wastegate - very good!

OK, then the variable vanes maybe sticky!

There is always a smart aleck....

Funny, I'm on my second one, must be a O2 vane sensor or a wastergate sensor, or whatever
