Good VW mechanic in South Bay (Los Angeles)

My extended warranty has just run out. Was charged $900 for master cylinder replacement for 2000 VW Golf by local dealer. Can anybody recommend a good VW mechanic who works on late model watercooled cars in Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Gardena or Carson areas.

Thanks in advance.

How was that broken down? Parts and labor? Are they gouging you on parts, or labor, or both?

Probably both since he is located in LA. I have noticed a bad trend where VW dealers are charging way more than say the Chiltons book time.

I also noticed that parts have jumped up considerably at the dealership. I think it's to force people who have been DYIing to buy new. JMO.

I also recently priced a new waterpump with the housing for $205.12 at the dealer while they are only $46 at Adirondack.

Pete, I have no doubt that dealer parts prices are going to be higher than most if not all aftermarket prices, but there are also very few places that are quoting genuine Bosch or VW parts if that matters. IMO, on some parts it really doesnt matter, but on others it does, and truthfully there are alot of shoddy aftermarket parts out there as well.

Prior to my leaving Volkswagen, I recall seeing a memo stating that because of losses in vehicle sales, the company was inflating part prices to try and compensate...remember...the company is losing money...when they are spending

60% of their profits on warranty repairs, you know that you have an issue....

It's been a few years since I was in the South Bay area (1999) but when I lived there Auto Dienst in Manhattan Beach did a very good job for me on my 1985 Golf. 1838 Manhattan Beach Blvd - (310) 372-7012.
