Help me stop her: 40K Mi. check

||Someone please write something here that my wife can read so she will ||not take her Jetta in to the dealer to be ripped off for a 40K Mi. ||checkup. She cannot grasp the notion that I have done all the needed ||service since the car was new and that I can "check" things as well as ||the dealer. Michael Pearlman

Michael, you need to get control of that wife of yours. Get her a copy of that "Submissive Wife" book that came out a few years ago :) Texas Parts Guy

If your wife wants her car serviced by a dealer and not you she probably has her reasons. If you are wise you won't force her to explain to you what they are. A 40K service by a dealer is still a lot cheaper than a divorce.

The 40K Mile is, at least on my TDI a major service interval (timing belt, waterpump, usually new tires are needed around here too... but that isn't a dealer item).

I just had a 40K sevice on our 2001 TDI and it was a few hundred dollars. They did oil/filter and change the fuel filter, but no timing belt or water pump, seemed like it was mostly a check, tweek and adjust. Tires (original) look like they'll make it well over 50K.

Sorry, the timing belt is for the automatic transmission TDI's only... Standard transmission cars are at a longer interval.

That's lame. I thought that there was a longer lasting belt by now? And... The water pump every 40K miles? That is lame.

I just changed the cambelt, water pump, thermostat, v-belts at 283400 on my golf diesel and the pump looked original. The thermostat was fairly new so that had been changed before. Oh the water pump didn't leak but after I took it out I spun it and it was really groaning. That's one negative about diesels and that is they mask sounds better than gas.

I saved myself a few bucks doing it on my own. I did have to remark the flywheel because it was not TDC so I guess the PO had someone remove and install it wrong. Probably during a clutch job. Who knows when.

Maybe the ol lady knows him better than he knows himself. :-)

There is a longer lasting belt - for the manual transmission cars..... :-(

I would definately skip the water pump replacement only because I already had experience from replacing a water pump at 140K miles (good orig WP) only to find out the new pump was bad. :( My 94 2.0L Jetta.

LOL! She also lets you think that you are the boss too. :)

mine is sposed to b changed @ 105k, sheesh, just outta warranty... hmm....
