Help with Rack

I have pulled out my old rack due to a leak (that was fun!) and I ordered a used one from a wrecker from out of town. No used passats in my city! After speaking to the dealer, he said there is 2 different racks, a ZF and a Conya(sp?) and I had the ZF. So the wrecker sold me what they claim is a ZF. But when i pulled mine out, it looks different, mostly the shock is different and the attachment for the shock on the passenger side inner tie rod. My old one says ZF on it, the replacement doesn't but they are both aluminum, and the dealer says only ZFs are aluminum housing and the other one steel Question: will this rack work? Do I have to switch over that shock, if so how? Is this rack even a ZF? Can a passat use either one? Attached is a picture of the 2 racks, the top is my old one I just pulled out.

Not knowing what year Passat you have doesn't help. But I can tell you, if it's a USA car I have yet to see one with the shock on it. Is that the one they sent you? Have you priced VW for a rebuilt unit?

Looks like the correct rack. The other make is Koyo. From the pic there is a boss to mount the steering damper onto the new rack, is it threaded ? You will just need to switch the old hardware for mounting the damper from the old to the new rack. Also measure the distance between the tie-rod ends and make sure they are the same on both racks. If not move the tie rods over as well. If you remove the bellows on the rack you will see that it can be taken apart. Rgds Alec

Sorry, its a 99 and a Canadian car, the used rack came from a also a 99 Canadian passat The one with a shock was the one in my car. VW wants $935 canadian for the rack compared to the $300 I paid used, I am tight on funds :)

I am just curious if this damper is required since the donor car did not have it.
